Caterpillar’s Learning Experiences W/c 28th November 2016

After visiting the zoo, the children have become interested in their own holidays and trips, hence the talk of aeroplanes and airports, as we watch them in the sky.  To extend on this line of thought we will be creating our very own airport with big and little planes to fly in and out with.  The planes will be numbered and I wonder whether we will be able to park them into the correct ports.  Back in the airport look out for the cafes and chairs with which we can sit back and wait for our plane, making sure of course that we keep a keen eye on our baggage.

The children have loved our technology shop, particularly filling the boxes with the various items and listening to the noise inside.  This week we will be turning it into a toy shop, which enables more thought about size and shape as we provide boxes, bags and wrapping paper.  Just how would you pack a teddy compared to a book or a car?  Will you buy a gift for your friend?  Can they guess what is inside?  While thinking about shapes, the children will be moving on from simple inset puzzle to a wide range of shape sorters for them to explore, as they attempt to fit them into the correct spaces.  Can you find the square or the circle?  How many sides does the triangle have?

The children will be testing their fine motor skills with threading, as they move from threading spoons, and spaghetti to shoe laces.  Thinking about hand and eye co-ordination look out for our fishing game.   Will you be able to hook the fish.  Will you catch a big one?  Don’t let him nibble your fingers!

There will be plenty of opportunity to explore textures inside and out with blue cornflour, filled with creatures from the sea, dolls houses and the railway mountain set in soapy sand and kitchen role play with pasta to serve up some delicious looking meals.  I wonder which you will play with?

Home Learning

  • Take me for a walk in my local area and point out to me a range of different shapes and patterns such as brick work, paving stones or window panes.
  • Let me make pasta jewellery at home.  All we need is a bag of pasta and some wool.
