Caterpillar’s Learning Experiences W/c 23rd October 2016

Posted on Sunday, October 23, 2016 in Caterpillars Learning

Our Caterpillars have been enjoying our ball and chutes, watching them as they are posting them through the holes and dropping on the other side.  This week we will be exploring the size and shape further as we introduce new sensory materials such as pine cones, conkers, eggs and acorns to see how they roll.  I wonder which ones will go slow and which will be the fastest?

Due to the interest of posting objects, our clothes shop will be changing to the post office.  The Caterpillars will have plenty of opportunities to mark make as they write letters and cards to their loved ones.  Let us take a walk to the post office and use a real post box to post some letters home.  Also, there will be a supply of wrapping paper, string and sellotape.  Will you be able to wrap your parcels?

This week we will be exploring a new texture of gloy, as we add glitter, powder paint, sequins, snowflakes into it to make a new colour contrast for each day.   Will you use a range of tools or will you be brave enough to touch with your fingers and hands?  How does it feel, will it ooze or drip between your fingers?  Leading into fine motor skills, the children have particularly enjoyed the large peg boards and this week we will be extending it further as we add the smaller boards and pegs to encourage more hand and eye co-ordination.  Will you be able to make a pattern and can you name or match the colours?

Outside the children have loved the dark area which will be remaining for yet another week.  However inside there will be an introduction of books which we read by torch light alongside sensory materials that will relate to the stories.  I feel the Bear Hunt becoming a favourite!

When we’re playing with things, use new words to describe what I’m doing with them or tell me what they are called. When you’re writing lists or filling in forms let me have my own paper or forms so that I can make my own marks.
