Butterflies Learning Experiences W/c 9th January 2017

Posted on Sunday, January 8, 2017 in Butterflies Learning

The Butterflies have enjoyed talking about their Christmas’ this week especially getting lots of sweets and chocolates. This week we will be focusing on healthy living through a variety of activities and learn about what it means to be healthy.

Welcome to the Stepping Stones Restaurant! In the role-play area the children will have the opportunity to make and create lots of exciting and healthy food to serve their friends. While the chefs are creating, their amazing masterpieces will talk about which foods are healthy and which foods are not and how they can affect our body. Are crisps good for us to eat? Can you remember which fruits or vegetables gives us the energy to run and jump?

In our malleable area, the children will be able to get hands on with making some sweet treats for our puddings. Using a pretend oven, kitchen utensils, cake tins and cases the cooks will be able to make and decorate their lovely cakes. Don’t forget to add the raisins and strawberries! What other fruits or vegetables could we add into our cakes? Remember that once you have finished baking and cooking we need to wash the dishes to keep them nice and clean. We will continue to have our washing up area out to help promote healthy living.

In the maths corner, we will be extending on from our shape arrangements by having various pictures of food to piece together. Linking this to our theme of healthy living as the pictures will be of different fruits and vegetables. What shapes can you find? How many triangles did you need to make the broccoli?

While the children are cooking and baking, we will be singing lots of Nursery Rhymes which involve food. These will consist of: five currant buns, ten fat sausages, pat a cake and hot cross buns. Can you think of anymore Nursery Rhymes that have food in them?

In the garden we will have an obstacle course out for the children to run, jump, crawl, skip and move around in various ways to explore what happens to our bodies when we exercise.

Home Learning

Let me help with the cooking at home. Talk about what food we are cutting up and how we cook it. Tell me why it is good and what happens to my body when we eat it!

Let’s have a taste test together! Why not buy new fruits and vegetables to try for our tea and pudding. I’m very keen to explore the texture and taste of new foods.
