Butterflies Learning Experiences W/c 31st October 2016

Posted on Sunday, October 30, 2016 in Butterflies Learning

‘Remember, remember the fifth of November’ To celebrate Guy Fawkes night the Butterflies will be toasting marshmallows, drinking hot chocolate and singing songs around our fire pit. We will be discussing how we stay safe and why we need to be very careful when standing around the fire. To link in with this activity, we will be making some pretend fires on the veranda using logs, twigs, leaves and our various other construction materials to help. Will you make a big fire or a small one?

As the weather has now started to change, we need to make sure that we are dressing up warm. In our home corner role-play we will be adding scarves, gloves, hats and jumpers for the children to dress up in and talk about why we need to keep ourselves warm when going outside.

Fireworks are fascinating to watch but, it’s even more exciting to listen to them. The Butterflies will have the chance to make their firework sounds this week by dropping a variety of materials such as; pasta, rice, conkers, acorns and more into bowls, bags, boxes and tinfoil trays. We will be experimenting with the different sounds talking about which one made the biggest noise, which one made the longest sound and how we can change the sounds by using other materials.

As fireworks happen during the evening, we will be creating a night sky scene in our maths corner. The children will be able to create patterns of rockets and fireworks bursting in the sky, talking about the shapes they have used and why they have used them. How will you make your firework? Will it have a long tail? How many squares have you used?

‘Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble.’ The Butterflies will be creating potions and casting spells this week. Using cauldrons and beakers they can experiment with mixing coloured water, adding glitter and even using objects that sound the same to make a rhyming potion. Will you put in the cat, bat and hat? Will you need to use a magic word? Using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, we will see if we can create some bubbling cauldrons.
