Butterflies Learning Experiences W/c 19th September 2016

Posted on Sunday, September 18, 2016 in Butterflies Learning

Our interests continue for another week with the mini beasts.  After discovering lots of slugs, snails, woodlice and spiders.  We are now going to be exploring their homes and discovering how we can create similar ones.  Will we be able to spin a web or create a wood pile for the woodlice to hide?  After creating our wormery, we are desperately looking for worms.  If you see rain this week it’s because we will be performing rain dances in the hope that the worms will rise to the surface!  Alongside our investigation of bugs we will also be thinking of the seasonal change as Autumn is fast approaching and looking for signs as we explore the trees and their colours.

The home corner has been a huge success, with children acting out some wonderful scenarios from their home life.  This week we will be extending with the addition of a first aid box to care for our poorly babies and a picnic hamper to make the most of the remaining sunny days.  I wonder what you will pack up?

In the small world area the fire engines remain a firm favourite, with the children wanting to find out about the roles of the fire fighter.  With the aid of books, this week children will have the opportunities to explore hazards safely as they put out fires in the small world town, save people from cars and rescue cats from tall places as we create a town full of dangers.

Shapes appear to be a keen favourite and these will be explored further as we encourage children to go on independent shape hunts around the garden and Butterfly room.  How many sides does a triangle have?  What’s the difference between a square and a rectangle?  Let’s find out as we play games galore in our outside area with some of these shapes to jump in and out of.  Alongside shapes we will be introducing the language of size with various puzzles and equipment as well as including the story of the Three Bears using small world figures and furniture.  Why do you think Baby Bear’s chair broke?  And who do you think was the biggest?  This fits in lovely with the puppet theatre that we will be creating so that children can act out their own stories with puppets to their friends.  We can’t wait to be entertained.

Home Learning

  • Let me help you create a picnic and let’s eat it together in the garden or visit the local park.
  • Let me explore the outside and pick up natural objects of interest.  Give me some glue and paper so that I can make a collage with my findings.
