Butterflies Learning Experiences W/c 12th September 2016

Posted on Sunday, September 11, 2016 in Butterflies Learning

Over the last couple of weeks some of the children have been lucky enough to sit inside a real fire engine, see and smell the smoke of a local bonfire and this week watched as the fire engine had a check over by some mechanics.  As you can imagine this has ignited their imagination (excuse the pun)! Therefore in the small world area children will have the opportunity to recreate these experiences and make up their own with the use of the fire engines, fire stations, ambulances, people and dolls houses.  Outside there will be mechanics on hand to fix cars, bikes, lorries and anything else that may be on hand as well as brushes and sponges for a personal car wash.

The children have loved the play dough and have been working really hard on their scissor control, this week look out for our cutting bin as we experiment with a wide range of materials to further extend our cutting.  Will you make a snip or will you be able to cut all the way along?  Let’s have fun trying.  Alongside our cutting bin we will be exploring cornflour and coloured glue in our malleable area.  Which will drip the fastest?  Can you roll one into a ball?  How will it feel on your hands?  What happens when it drys?  Let’s investigate.

Talking about investigation, look out for our new area on the verandah as we discover the names of mini beasts, where mini beasts like to live and how they keep safe. Look out for the tools to further explore them before safely returning them back to where they belong.  Don’t forget before releasing them to draw a picture or take a photo.

Outside children will be continuing their interest in gross motor skills as they explore and create obstacle courses and their fine motor skills by using various equipment to fill and empty a range of containers during water play.  Will you be able to fill to the correct measure or will you forget to stop?  Talking about measure leads us nicely into maths where we will be concentrating on numerals and quantities as well as making arrangements with shapes.  We will be discovering the ‘ten green bottle’ game and providing pens and paper for representing marks as we take scores.

Home Learning

  • Take me on a bug hunt around our garden or the local park or woodland.  Let me tell you about what I find?  Help me to count it’s legs or talk about it’s colours or patterns that it may have.
  • Help me make a game of skittles with boxes and bottles. Using a ball lets see how many we knock down.  I can keep score by making marks on a piece of paper.
