Caterpillar’s Learning Experiences W/c 16th January 2017

Posted on Sunday, January 15, 2017 in Caterpillars Learning

This week the Caterpillars are going Jurassic as we explore the world of the dinosaurs.  There will be plenty of opportunities to investigate, colour, size and quantity as well as using our loud and quiet voices as we stomp across the terrain.  With the introduction of some dinosaur stories maybe we can learn how to move just like them?

Meanwhile, over in the maths area, the Caterpillars will be exploring numeral to quantity as they count beads into the relevant numerals in the bun tins.  For the younger ones look out for the colour matching bun tins.  As we think about sorting and categorising over in our malleable area, we will be exploring oats, rice and pasta with different size pots to fill and empty using various utensils.  How many scoops will it take to fill the big pot?  Can you put just pasta in one?  Is your pot full?  Can you put more in?

Meanwhile, outside there will be wet sand to experience with buckets, moulds and spades.  Can you make a sandcastle?  What marks could you make in the sand?  Also outside the children will be using their experiences to get imaginative as they discover the dolls houses, with the addition of wooden bricks they will also be able to make their homes for their play figures too.  Back indoors and with lots of younger siblings we will be learning how to be kind and gentle with babies through baby role play.  Will you read them a story, change their nappy or feed them a bottle?

Finally, lots of children are showing an interest in mark making, and this week we will be exploring how to create lines and circles through gross motor skills such as streamer shakers and mark making in flour, in readiness for putting pen to paper.
