Butterflies Learning Experiences W/c 12th December 2016

Posted on Sunday, December 11, 2016 in Butterflies Learning

T’was, the night before Christmas,  don’t worry we’re only pretending.  Upstairs in our role play area, we will be drinking hot chocolate, preparing our vegetables, hanging up our stockings and putting a Mince pie and carrot out for Santa and Rudolph before reading a story and going to bed.

Meanwhile, over in the Santa’s workshop we will be preparing the sledge and fill it with presents ready for the big night.  Outside we will need to make sure that our reindeer are well looked after with plenty of straw, oats and carrots so that they can make it all around the world in time for Christmas Day.

The children are still keen to experience snow and so moving on from the Polar Express, this week we will be creating a small town scene that has most definitely been snowed in. There will be cars to dig out, pathways to be cleared and snow ploughs needed to make roads passable. While the adults are doing all the hard work, the small world children will be having fun at the local ice rink as they skate on the ice that we are attempting to make!

Over in the maths area children will be looking at shapes as they attempt to wrap squares, triangles, circles and rectangles of various sizes.  Can you name the shape?  How many sides does a square have?  Will you have enough paper?  How long does your piece of ribbon need to be?  Who will your present be for?

This week in addition to our Nativity play the children will be creating lots of Christmassy gift and cards to bring home for the Special people in their lives.  Look forward to decorating your home with some lovely keepsakes.

Home Learning

  • Let’s play ‘Matchbox maths’.  How many objects can I fit into a matchbox.  Talk with me about full and empty.  Let me think about size as I put things in.  Let me count the total of objects that fit in.
  • Help me to build a play scene for some of my small world characters.  Try to add interest by including places to hide, different heights and textures.
